Important
information you need to know about
how the Daylight Savings Time change will affect you.
*UPDATED 10/10/07
Dear
NMGI Client,
The new
Daylight Savings Time (DST)
went into affect on Sunday, March 11th at
2am. Which was three weeks earlier than normal.
On July 29, 2005, Congress passed the
Energy
Policy Act of 2005 which is legislation to expand the DST period
by four weeks. DST will start three weeks earlier and
end one week later in 2007. There are known issues in your
Microsoft products as a direct result of this Extended
Daylight Savings Time period (EDST). The decision
to change these dates has caused the biggest global
technology change since Y2K (see
the list of affected systems/products).
Your
system's may be affected when the EDST extends beyond
the normal date of October 28th until 2am on Sunday
November 4th.
Your
Microsoft Outlook Calendar may be showing the
affects of this change. Appointments during this EDST period may be displayed
incorrectly. Entries may show start times one
hour later than scheduled, as well as end times. In addition
to appointments, holidays,
birthdays and other all-day events may be spanned across two days.
As a
Microsoft Gold Partner, NMGI is committed to helping you
resolve this issue. Per our discussions with Microsoft and their official
recommendations we are prepared to resolve your DST
related issues. Please contact Adella Luna at
620-662-2700 Ext. 121 to schedule a technical support
specialist to help you.
We have
compiled a list of steps to compliance as listed below.
If you have any questions, please email us at
helpdesk@nmgi.com
or call.
STEPS TO COMPLIANCE
1. Perform a
Microsoft
Update on your workstations to download the necessary
patches. If you just want to patch Windows XP SP2
- Download patch referred to in Microsoft Knowledge Base
article #
933360.
Legacy operating system updates and information are
available in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article #
914387
Update
all Windows XP Service Pack 2
workstations using
Microsoft Update. Please install all the updates
that are found. Follow the on-screen instructions to
install the Microsoft Update application tool.
This may require you to validate your Windows Operating
System.
You may be required to install an ActiveX control.
Download
patch from NMGI.com KB931836.

CLIENTS
ATTENTION!: Since Windows 2000 is no longer
supported by Microsoft you will need to adjust the
DST changes manually by running the TZEdit tool.
If you need to roll out to more than one client, instructions are available
by clicking on the Microsoft Knowledge Base article
KB914387. Please contact NMGI
if you have any difficulties.

Download a Zip version here.
Based on your time zone,
you can move the start date of the new DST by using
the TZEdit.exe tool.
The start date of 2007 DST
is Sunday March 11th at 2am, and the end date is
Sunday November 4th at 2am. These dates are
represented as the second Sunday in March and the
first Sunday in November.

Change the Start Day: to
the Second Sunday of March at 2am
Change the Last Day: to First Sunday of November at

CITRIX CLIENTS NOTE:
When your Microsoft Server and Exchange patches are
applied, your client software will be updated. However,
the client will need to initiate the TZMove program
in order to complete their Outlook Calendar update.
Please see Step # 4 for instructions on how to
implement TZMove.
More Citrix Information Available Here!
2. Perform a Microsoft
Office Update
on all workstations that run Outlook.
Please install all the updates that are available
for your Office product lines. If you are
using Office 2007, you are already compliant.
However, if you are using any version of Office
prior to 2007, you WILL NEED to update your
applications.
3. Perform a
Windows
Update on your servers to download the necessary
patches. If you only wish to install the Windows
2003 Server patch specifically related to the Daylight
Savings Time patch, download and installation
instructions are available in the Microsoft Knowledge
Base article
KB931836.
OUTLOOK CALENDAR USERS! The following is the most
important step!
4. Perform a TZMOVE on
your Outlook Calendar. You must do this while logged in
as the affected user. Download and execute the
TZMOVE (Time Zone Data Update Tool for Microsoft Office
Outlook) tool. This is Microsoft's official client repair
tool to make changes to affected calendar entries.
to download this tool from NMGI.com.

Download a Zip version here.
Affected calendar items
may include the following: recurring events,
appointments, birthdays, holidays and other all-day
events. When you execute this program from the
workstation it will scan the calendar and correct the
entries automatically and create a log file.
Important note: the TZMove tool will regenerate
appointment requests automatically, and re-invite people
to attend. This is the only way to move
appointments back to the original times. This tool
cannot move appointments that have already been
sent/accepted.
Additional instructions
for performing the TZMOVE.
-
Run the tool by
double-clicking the
tzmove.exe file.
-
Accept the
Microsoft Software Licensing Terms by clicking the
check-box and hit "Continue".
-
This tool will run
through a quick install and open a small window
named "Change Calendar Time Zone".
-
Choose the time zone
that applies to you. Select
"OK"
-
The tool will go through
the appointments and select all entries that need to be updated.
-
The "Details" button can
be selected in order to view all changes that will
occur or have occurred.
-
Select "OK" and then
select the second "OK" button.
-
All appointments have
been updated for the selected mailbox.
-
This will need to be
performed
on every workstation that uses Outlook calendars.
Clients
who subscribe to NMGI's patch management service can
rest assured we have pushed all the necessary patches to
your workstation clients and servers. However,
your Outlook Calendar may still be affected.
Please perform the TZMove tool to correct the calendar.
Shared Calendars
Microsoft has known issues related to entries in a
shared calendar. Each affected user who adds items
to a shared calendar may have created an item that will
be affected by the EDST period. By performing the
TZMove.exe utility, you can correct these entries.
KB#
931667
The
steps to correct these types of calendars are as
follows.
-
Login to Outlook
using the account who has "owner" privileges of the
shared calendar.
-
Execute the
TZMove.exe utility (download
available here).
-
Click the "Custom
..." button.

-
Locate and select
the affected Shared Calendar and click OK.

-
Perform the update
by clicking OK.
-
Review the log
file that is created and check the items carefully
to make sure they are correct. Uncheck items
that you do not want to change.
Affected Mobile Devices:
Devices that are affected by
the EDST could include any of the following.
Please check with your service provider to verify your
device is compliant. Windows Mobile device
information is available at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/daylightsaving
Some examples are
Blackberry's, Windows Mobile devices and Palm OS devices.
Symbian devices such as a standard cell phone are not
affected because they get their time from the service
provided network. Your clock will automatically
update on Sunday morning at 2:00am.
If your
device synchronizes with a calendar database such as
Act! or Pocket Outlook, you can be affected!
Please contact an NMGI representative if you need
further assistance.
UPDATED!!!
Blackberry users should click here and read the
information available.
Affected Software:
Several software programs
are affected by the EDST change as well. Programs
that maintain your calendar, such as contact management
databases (Act!) and CRM software can be affected.
Please contact your software
vendor for compliance. Also, when you synchronize
your calendar with a mobile device you can incorrectly
display appointment times.
